After the battle of Tser Hill, with the party's allies gathering in Vallaki and Mordenkainen restored, he dropped the Rictavio persona and now operates openly as himself. Van Richten is methodical, experienced, and utterly dedicated to destroying Strahd.

Ezmerelda is Van Richten's former student. They parted ways due to a disagreement but she came to Barovia searching for him.
