Mordenkainen is a legendary archmage from the world of Oerth. He came to Barovia a year ago at the request of his old friend Rudolph Van Richten to help defeat Strahd and the Stormraven Sisters. After a failed assault on Castle Ravenloft that left him broken and mad, he spent ten months wandering the northern woods near Mount Baratok, attacking anything that came close. Van Richten and Ezmerelda tracked him down, restored him, and brought him back to Vallaki, where he has joined the council against Strahd.

One of Mordenkainen's oldest and closest friends. Van Richten called him to Barovia to help defeat Strahd and the Stormraven Sisters. They share a bond forged across decades of fighting the supernatural.

Mordenkainen has an uncle/niece relationship with Ezmerelda. She calls him 'Uncle Mordy.' Van Richten asked Mordenkainen to help avenge the death of her family, and it did not take much convincing.

Ismark fought alongside Mordenkainen in the assault on Castle Ravenloft. He was one of three survivors.

Ireena joined the assault on Castle Ravenloft. When Strahd saw her on the ramparts, he faltered, giving Mordenkainen the opening to strike.

Doru fought in the assault on Castle Ravenloft. During the battle, Seraphine Stormraven bit him and turned him into a vampire spawn.

Mordenkainen gravely wounded Strahd during the assault on Castle Ravenloft. Strahd struck him down and cast him from the battlements. Strahd believes him dead.
